Weekend Acute Care Clinics

A couple of weeks ago, we announced a new service related to expanded hours for acute care situations on the weekends. As a clinic committed to outstanding care, we regularly evaluate opportunities to provide enhanced experiences for our patients. In this instance, we know that there are times where a treatment is required sooner rather than later, and timing is of the essence.

“I’m thrilled that we are able to provide this flexible offering for our patients,” said Dr. Tom Buroker, physician at Mission Cancer + Blood. “Offering extended hours on the weekend will allow us to provide care for our patients in a familiar, comfortable setting without the hassle of re-scheduling during the week. This was an easy decision for us, knowing that the positive impact will be tremendous.”

The enhanced schedule has already proven to be very successful and a popular option with patients. “We are heading into our fourth weekend of this new offering, and the response has been very encouraging so far,” Dr. Buroker said. “Our staff, too, has been very adaptive with scheduling and coverage. After a year filled with new challenges, it’s been incredibly rewarding to see the team’s can-do attitude continue.”

The Iowa Methodist Medical Center and Mercy Downtown locations are open Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This provides patients opportunities for evaluation and possible treatment in the event of specific care situations as determined by your physician.

During these weekend hours, both clinics will be staffed with one Advanced Patient Provider (APP), two nurses and one lab staff member available through pre-scheduled appointments only. As a reminder, at this time weekend visits and treatments will be limited to:

• Injections
• IVF
• Acutely ill add-on patients
• Chemo pump unhooks
• Lab checks

“As we move forward, we will continue to look at opportunities to serve our patients, and plan to make adjustments as needed,” Dr. Buroker said. “The ability to be flexible is critical for us in serving our patients who undergo so much on a day-to-day basis. It is an honor to be there as a reliable partner.”
